Buffered magnesium is when a company or manufacturer hides magnesium oxide within their magnesium formula, then labels it as something else entirely. For example, a brand might claim their "magnesium glycinate" contains 20% elemental magnesium. This isn't chemically achievable, even fully reacted, dried magnesium glycinate contains no more than 12% elemental magnesium. So if a company claims their formula has 1000mg of magnesium glycinate at 12% elemental, only 120mg of that is actual magnesium, with the remainder being the amino acid glycine.
What's really happening is that some companies blend cheap magnesium oxide with glycine and call the result "magnesium glycinate." That means you're actually consuming magnesium oxide plus the amino acid glycine, not a true chelated glycinate. This matters because magnesium oxide carries a much higher elemental magnesium content, at around 60%, which makes the total "elemental magnesium" figure on the label look far more impressive than it really is.
Personally, I'm a fan of oxide. People report real benefits from magnesium oxide, and in my opinion it has a strong place in the market, but that's a post for another time, as it's an interesting topic in its own right.

Elemental Magnesium Content by Form
To make buffered magnesium easier to spot, here's a breakdown of how much elemental magnesium each common form actually provides, so you and your clients can read labelling and draw your own conclusions:

How Labelling Should Work
EFSA states everyone should consume 375mg of elemental magnesium daily, whether from food or supplements, that's the minimum. A compliant label should read: total elemental magnesium 375mg = 100% NRV (Nutrient Reference Value).
A properly laid out nutritional information table should show, for each form of magnesium used: the amount per serving (e.g., per 1 or 2 capsules), the elemental magnesium amount, and the contribution to the NRV. For example, our Daily 5 in 1 Magnesium contains 350mg of magnesium glycinate per 2 capsules. At 12% elemental, that gives you 42mg of actual magnesium, the remaining 308mg is the amino acid glycine.
How Buffered Magnesium Shows Up in the Wild
Here's what we're increasingly seeing in the industry, and how to recognise buffered magnesium when you see it:
Example 1 - total-only labelling. The label shows only the total amount of magnesium glycinate, marks the NRV with an asterisk, and states an "elemental amount" of 384mg. Using the calculation above, the true total should be closer to 244mg. That missing 140mg? That's your buffered magnesium right there - almost certainly topped up with cheap magnesium oxide that isn't declared as its own line item.
Example 2 - combined blends. The label combines several magnesium forms without declaring each one individually. This lets the brand hide the amount of each form and effectively "buffer" the elemental total and NRV, while marketing the product as containing "the best magnesium in the world" because it includes everything. When you see 67% NRV claimed, and remember magnesium oxide alone provides 60% elemental magnesium, it's reasonable to conclude the bulk of that formula is magnesium oxide with a token amount of the other forms added for the label. This also lets brands run aggressive discounts, since bulk magnesium oxide is far cheaper than chelated forms.
Example 3 - NRV omitted, math off. The NRV is missing, but the ingredient breakdown is shown. Even so, the math doesn't add up - the real total comes to around 102mg of elemental magnesium, with oxide contributing the largest share.
Example 4 - a physical impossibility. To hit 300mg of elemental magnesium from magnesium glycinate alone, each capsule would need to contain 1,250mg of magnesium glycinate (1,100mg glycine, 150mg magnesium). That would require a 000 capsule - the largest size a supplement company can source, at 26.1mm in length. On closer inspection, the actual capsule used is a size 00, which physically could not hold that amount of ingredient. The claim simply isn't possible.
Why Buffered Magnesium Matters
Buffered magnesium isn't just a labelling technicality, it changes what you or your clients are actually paying for. A supplement marketed as premium magnesium glycinate at a "high elemental" percentage may, in reality, be mostly magnesium oxide with a small amount of glycinate added for the marketing claim. That's not automatically a bad product (oxide has its place), but it should be priced and positioned as what it actually is, not as a premium chelated formula.
For practitioners, being able to spot buffered magnesium means you can:
- Explain to clients why two "375mg elemental magnesium" products can have very different effects and price points
- Avoid recommending a formula on the basis of an NRV percentage that doesn't hold up mathematically
- Push back on supplier claims that don't match known elemental percentages for each form
How to Spot Buffered Magnesium on a Label
- Check whether each magnesium form is declared individually, or lumped into a blend
- Cross-reference the claimed elemental percentage against known values (see the table above)
- Do the maths - multiply the mg of each form by its elemental percentage, then compare that to the label's total elemental claim
- Be sceptical of high elemental percentages attached to glycinate, threonate, or taurate, these forms simply can't deliver a high elemental yield on their own
- Consider capsule size versus claimed ingredient weight, some claims are physically impossible to fit
The Bottom Line on Buffered Magnesium
At the end of the day, buffered magnesium comes down to transparency. A brand isn't necessarily doing anything illegal by blending magnesium oxide with other forms, but it should be declared clearly, form by form, so you can see exactly what you're buying. The moment a label lumps everything into one number without breaking down each form, that's your cue to ask questions. Once you know the real elemental percentages for each type of magnesium, spotting a buffered magnesium claim becomes second nature, and you'll never look at a supplement label the same way again.

Is buffered magnesium bad for you?
Not necessarily. Magnesium oxide (the form usually hidden inside buffered magnesium blends) is still absorbed and used by the body, and plenty of people report good results from it. The issue with buffered magnesium isn't safety — it's transparency. You're often paying a premium price for what you believe is a fully chelated form like glycinate, when a large portion of the elemental magnesium is actually coming from cheaper oxide.
How can I tell if my magnesium supplement is buffered?
Check whether the label breaks down each magnesium form individually with its own elemental amount, or whether it just gives one combined "elemental magnesium" total. If only a combined figure is shown, use the elemental percentages in the table above to do the maths yourself, if the numbers don't add up, you're likely looking at buffered magnesium.
