The VHC Vitamin D Reader turns a finger-prick blood sample into a quantitative 25-OH vitamin D result during your client's appointment, so you can discuss the result and agree on next steps there and then. No lab, no postal kit and no second appointment to discuss the results. Many rapid vitamin D tests sold for home use are semi-quantitative: they place the result in a band by comparing line colours. The VHC Reader measures the test line optically and gives you a figure in ng/ml and nmol/l within 15 minutes that you can track over time with every client visit.

• Quantitative: a vitamin D number, not a colour band: The VHC Reader provides a quantitative 25-OH vitamin D result in both ng/ml and nmol/l, so you can see how far a client is from vitamin D thresholds and track changes between tests.

How the VHC Vitamin D Reader works

The test is a lateral flow immunoassay (immunochromatography), designed for quantitative testing by the reader. The strip develops a test line according to the amount of 25-OH vitamin D in the sample. The reader measures that line optically and converts it into a concentration using the lot settings loaded from the RFID card.

1. Collect: A quick finger prick using the sample collection device (comes with the test strips) collects a small amount of blood (10 microliters).
2. Mix: Mix the blood sample with the buffer using hand movement. The sample is now ready to test.
3. Test: Add the sample to the test strip and wait 15 minutes using the built-in timer of the reader.
4. Read: The reader measures the line and displays the results presenting them in ng/mL and nmol/L.
5. Record: Download the results to the software. Then build an optimised vitamin D supplement plan.

Why test 25-OH Vitamin D levels?

Vitamin D from sunlight, food and traditional D3 supplements (cholecalciferol) is converted in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (Calcifediol), which circulates for weeks and reflects the body's supply. That makes it the standard marker of vitamin D status. The active hormone, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, is a poor guide: it can read normal or even high in someone who is deficient (Kennel et al., 2010).

Vitamin D Reader Test Performance.

The VHC Vitamin D test kit fully conforms to the requirements for a CE-marked medical device and is for professional use only.

The VHC Vitamin-D and the VHC-Reader platform are registered as an in-vitro diagnostic quantitative Medical Device under EU Directive 98/79/EC. The VHC reader and test strips also voluntarily participate in the DEQAS (Vitamin D External Quality Assessment Scheme), a worldwide accepted external quality control program, organised by the Endocrine Laboratory in Charing Cross Hospital.

DEQAS was incorporated in 1989, and has over 1200 participants in 54 countries. Its objective is to ensure the analytical reliability of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) assays. The reference method used is blinded serum LC-MS (Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry), which is regarded as the most accurate method to measure quantitative Vitamin D.

How to use the VHC Reader with vitamin D Test Strips

Once you order the full vitamin D test kit, please email hello@madebydaily.com with a date/time that works best for you for online training. Once training is complete, a certificate for being a rapid vitamin D tester will be sent.

Running the test in 6 easy steps:

1. Prepare: Have the client wash and dry their hands or use a wipe to clean the finger. Put on gloves and have the client warm their hands so blood flows freely.
2. Collect: Prick the index finger with a single-use lancet, wipe away the first drop and fill the capillary completely.
3. Mix: Mix the sample with the buffer; the sample is now ready to be tested.
4. Test: Add the sample to the test strip and start a 15-minute timer. Too short or too long a wait gives a wrong result.
5. Read: Place the reader on the strip, scan the RFID card when prompted, and read the result in ng/ml and nmol/l.
6. Explain: Save the result in the software, explain it using the vitamin D thresholds, and agree on the next steps.
